I have been asked many times how to dry your own pumpkin, watermelon, and melon (spanspek) pips for your parrot. It’s some of the most natural and healthy snacks that you can give them.
Steamed, raw, and dried. You can give your parrot a handful every day.
I remove the pips and let them soak in water for about 15 minutes (especially pumpkin pips) so that the flesh surrounding the pips can become soft.
Then I add the pips to a bucket and wash them hard using my hands so that the pips become loose.
I wash the pips with fresh water every 2 to 3 minutes while I remove the clean pips. After all the clean pips have been removed, I place them on a board and place them on my kitchen’s windowsill.
I turn the pips at least 3 times a day, using my hands.
After 3 to 4 days, your pips are nicely dry. You will see that skin becomes loose from the pips.
Store in a tightly sealed Tupperware container.
You can also roast your pips with spices:
Preheat your oven to 120 degrees.
Mix your dried pips with spices of your choice ( turmeric, garlic, chili, cayenne pepper, rosemary, Italian Herbs, etc.)
Bake for 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove from oven and cool down.
Store in a tightly sealed Tupperware container.
