Can birds eat spirulina? Parrots, budgies, cockatiels, finches

Can birds eat spirulina? This is a blue-green algae, a primitive single celled plant, which is cultivated on ponds of water or in lakes. It finds its origin in South America.

Benefits of spirulina:

  • It supplies high energy to the body, quickly.
  • It contains proteins that are easily absorbed by the body.
  • Spirulina contains Vitamin A, all the Vitamin Bs, the only plant source of Vitamin B12, and Vitamin E.
  • It contains calcium, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, and selenium.

It is recommended that spirulina should not be taken continuously, as it can build up in the system and become counterproductive. The best practice is to give it only when a period of hard work, stress, a change in environment, or breeding is expected. It should be given once daily for a maximum of 3 weeks, and then discontinued, until required again.
