The Nutritive value and health benefits of Kelp

Kelp for birds

Kelp is Nature’s finest supplement – a supplement that is completely absorbed by the body. Kelps are also known as seaweeds or sea vegetables.

Seaweed/kelp has been eaten as a vegetable by many different races for the past 8,000 years.

Kelps are neither plants nor animals but belong to the algae family. The subtle difference is that it absorbs its nutrients from the seawater rather than from the sea sand. Kelps can be found in different colors – brown, very dark brown almost black, red, & green. They are the most highly developed members of the algae group. There are more than 700 different seaweeds.

Safe dosage of kelp for birds:

As stated above, it is only necessary to feed kelp to your birds once or twice a week. Add 3-4 tsp to 1kg soft food, or 3-4 tsp to 1kg of seed. If you only have a few birds, then sprinkle a little kelp powder onto fresh fruit once a week. Or add a pinch in the seed once a week.

Safety concerns:

One has to ascertain that the Kelp is growing in the sea that is not contaminated by heavy metals, or that there are no chemically polluted river mouths nearby that flow into that part of the sea. The kelp that is supplied by Meridian Herbs ‘Herbs for Birds’ is harvested from the west coast of South Africa where the sea is considered to be unpolluted.
