Polokwane Nature Reserve birding: Endemics, Habitats, Access and facilities
Polokwane Nature Reserve birding: Polokwane (previously Petersburg) Nature Reserve in South Africa is one of my best birding spots when I travel to the Kruger National Park. Polokwane is the capital city of the Limpopo Province. It is a prime birding destination, especially known for its rich variety of species and unique habitats. Here’s an overview of what you can expect when birding in the Polokwane Nature Reserve:
1. Polokwane Nature Reserve birding – Endemic Birds
- Short-clawed Lark: This species is one of the most sought-after birds in the reserve, typically found in the reserve’s grasslands.
- Crested Barbet: Although not exclusive to the reserve, it’s commonly seen here and is a favorite among birdwatchers.
- Kalahari Scrub-Robin: Often seen in the dry scrub areas of the reserve.
- Northern Black Korhaan: Frequently spotted in open grasslands, this species is known for its striking appearance and loud calls.
2. Habitats
- Sourveld Grasslands: The reserve’s extensive grasslands are home to species like the Short-clawed Lark, Northern Black Korhaan, and various other grassland specialists.
- Acacia Thornveld: This habitat is characterized by scattered thorn trees and is home to a variety of species including robins, hornbills, and barbets.
- Mixed Bushveld: The reserve’s bushveld areas support a wide range of bird species, including the Kalahari Scrub-Robin and various species of doves, woodpeckers, and starlings.
- Wetlands and Dams: The reserve has several small dams and wetlands that attract waterfowl, herons, and kingfishers, making them excellent spots for birdwatching.
3. Access
- Main Entrance: The reserve is located just outside the city of Polokwane, making it easily accessible via the R521 road. The main entrance is well-marked, and the reserve is a short drive from the city center.
- Self-drive Routes: The reserve has a network of well-maintained gravel roads that are suitable for all vehicle types, allowing easy access to various habitats and birding spots.
- Walking Trails: There are several marked walking trails within the reserve that take you through different habitats, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching on foot.
- Cycling Routes: The reserve also has designated cycling routes, which allow birders to explore more of the area at a leisurely pace.
4. Facilities
- Accommodation: While the reserve itself does not offer accommodation, Polokwane city, which is nearby, has various lodging options ranging from hotels to guesthouses.
- Picnic Sites: There are well-maintained picnic areas within the reserve where visitors can relax and enjoy the natural surroundings between birding sessions.
- Visitor Center: The reserve’s visitor center provides information on the flora and fauna of the area, including a checklist of bird species that can be found in the reserve.
- Guided Tours: Guided birdwatching tours are available upon request, offering the expertise of local guides to help you spot and identify the reserve’s birdlife.

Polokwane Nature Reserve is a must-visit for birders, especially those interested in grassland and savannah species. Its proximity to the city and well-maintained facilities make it a convenient and rewarding birding destination. I can’t wait to visit this Nature Reserve again.
Another great birding spot is Doorndraai Dam that is also located in the Limpopo Province.
