Can birds eat eggs? – Content creator: Petrus A. van Tonder

Eggs don’t have any carbohydrates and no sugar. It is high in protein and other nutrients. Birds can eat eggs raw and prepared eggs. They eat all 3 parts of the egg: the shell, the yolk, and the whites.

Here is a great recipe by Johnny King:

SCRAMBLED EGGS FOR BIRDS

Can birds eat eggs

My birds LOVE scrambled eggs. While there is fat in eggs themselves, it’s only around five grams, and more than half of that is unsaturated, the good type that actually helps counterbalance cholesterol’s artery-clogging effects.

The message is not only are eggs not ‘bad’ for birds, but they’re also nutritious – packed with protein, vitamins, and antioxidants. They’re actually one of the rare food sources of vitamin D, something many birds are lacking.

You can put TONS of healthy foods into scrambled eggs to get your bird to try new things.

Some foods you can add to scrambled eggs:

  • Peppers
  • Silver Beet
  • Corn
  • Rice
  • Lentils
  • Peas
  • Nuts (sparingly)
  • Seeds

Any other fresh veggies/fruit that are non-toxic to parrots.

I scramble the eggs in a bowl and cook in the microwave for 2 minutes. Then I cut the egg up into small pieces about 10mm square.

Offering eggs as part of their diet can provide several benefits. However, there are some considerations and guidelines to follow when feeding eggs to birds to ensure their health and well-being.

Benefits of Feeding Eggs to Birds

  1. High-Quality Protein:
    • Eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein, which is essential for growth, repair, and overall health in birds.
  2. Vitamins and Minerals:
    • Eggs contain various vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, B-complex vitamins, and minerals like calcium, iron, and selenium, all of which contribute to a bird’s nutritional needs.
  3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids:
    • Eggs, especially those enriched with omega-3 fatty acids, can support healthy feathers, skin, and overall metabolism in birds.
  4. Calcium:
    • The eggshells are a great source of calcium, which is crucial for egg-laying birds to help form strong eggshells and prevent calcium deficiency.

Birds eat eggs – How to Feed

  1. Cooking the Eggs:
    • Boiled or Scrambled: It’s best to offer eggs that are boiled or scrambled without any added salt, oil, or spices. Raw eggs should generally be avoided due to the risk of bacterial contamination.
    • Chop or Mash: Once cooked, chop or mash the eggs into small, manageable pieces that birds can easily eat.
  2. Including Eggshells:
    • Crushed Eggshells: After boiling the eggs, you can crush the eggshells into fine pieces and offer them to the birds. Ensure the shells are clean and free of any membrane.
    • Calcium Supplement: Eggshells provide an excellent natural calcium supplement, particularly beneficial for breeding females.
  3. Portion Control:
    • Moderation: While eggs are nutritious, they should be fed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Overfeeding eggs can lead to nutritional imbalances.

Advice and Considerations

  1. Species-Specific Needs:
    • Different bird species have varying dietary requirements. Ensure that the inclusion of eggs fits the specific dietary needs of the bird species you are caring for.
  2. Hygiene:
    • Always maintain high hygiene standards when preparing and serving eggs. Clean the feeding dishes regularly to prevent bacterial growth.
  3. Observation:
    • Monitor your birds after introducing eggs to their diet. Look for any signs of digestive issues or allergic reactions and adjust their diet accordingly.
  4. Varied Diet:
    • Eggs should be part of a varied diet that includes seeds, pellets, fruits, vegetables, and other protein sources. A balanced diet ensures that birds receive all the essential nutrients they need.
  5. Breeding Birds:
    • For breeding birds, providing additional protein and calcium through eggs can support healthy egg production and chick development. However, always consult with a veterinarian or avian specialist for tailored advice.

By incorporating eggs into a bird’s diet appropriately, you can provide them with valuable nutrients that support their overall health and well-being.

NOTE: Only give quantity which can be eaten in an hour or two. Discard any leftovers.
