The value of herbs for birds: Parrots, Budgies, Cockatiels
The value of herbs for birds – Our second magazine featured a great article about herbs by Margie Frayne. I had the privilege to meet Margie in person and see where all the herbs are grown.
Condensed from the book ‘Herbs for Birds & other Caged Animals” by Margie Frayne:
When birds are free to find their own food in the open, they seek out a great variety of foods to eat. Altogether this supplies them with a surprisingly varied diet. Wild birds will seek out and eat not only seeds but also leafy parts of green vegetables and other green plants, drink the nectar from flowers, & eat the ripe fruits of many small plants, many of which we consider to be “just weeds”, but which are in actual fact, plants rich in valuable proteins, vitamins, and minerals.
Many birds that we classify as seed-eaters also eat a few insects, at times. These wild creatures know that this varied diet is vital for their long-term health, and to support good breeding.
The value of herbs for birds
They regularly seek out and eat specific herbal healing plants that they instinctively know will keep their little bodies in optimum health. This inherent knowledge of being able to identify and utilize the correct medicinal plants is either passed down from one generation to the next by the example of the parent birds, or the community of older birds, or by pure instinct.
Unfortunately, your caged birds are unable to make these choices at all, and the onus for the optimum health of these pretty creatures now rests on you, the owner, to supply them with a well-planned, varied, and balanced diet. But despite all your good intentions, some birds still suffer from compromised health, and it is difficult to find the root cause of these problems.
One needs to recognize that breeding birds are caged from one generation to another, year after year, and if they are not given a really well-planned, highly nutritious & varied diet, they will slowly start to show signs of malnutrition, lethargy, diminished breeding, stress and ultimately illness. These deficiencies are carried through to their offspring, and suddenly one notices problems, like the inability to breed, nervous tics, stress, depression, and generally poor health.
The factor that will minimize these conditions is found in HERBS.
It is highly recommended that caged birds should be given a daily dose of a variety of herbal plants, whether they be fresh or dried because they are packed full of Micro-nutrients.
Herbs are a totally natural way to improve and maintain the general health of caged birds. They contain an array of effective healing, nourishing & cleansing compounds that will raise and maintain the health of caged birds.
